Robert Shay

Robert Shay is professor of musicology and former dean of the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder. His writings on the music of Henry Purcell and seventeenth-century England are well known, particularly the book Purcell Manuscripts: The Principal Musical Sources (co-authored with Robert Thompson), a recipient of the Music Library Association’s Vincent H. Duckles Award, given annually to “the best book-length bibliography or other research tool in music.”  Articles and reviews have appeared in the journals Early MusicJournal of Seventeenth-Century Music, Music & Letters, and Notes, and in the books Purcell Studies and King Arthur in Music.  His edition of Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas, will be published by Bärenreiter in early 2023.  Shay holds the M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the M.Mus. in choral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music, and the B.Mus. in vocal performance from Wheaton College (Illinois).
