Travis Stimeling (they/them) is professor of musicology and coordinator of programs in Appalachian music and Appalachian studies at West Virginia University. A scholar of commercial country and Appalachian traditional music, they have published numerous books and articles, including, most recently, Nashville Cats: Record Production in Music City (Oxford University Press, 2020), The Opioid Epidemic and U.S. Culture: Expression, Art, and Politics in an Age of Addiction (West Virginia University Press, 2020), and Songwriting in Contemporary West Virginia: Profiles and Reflections (West Virginia University Press, 2018). Active in the old-time and bluegrass scenes of north-central West Virginia, Stimeling is a member of the string band Half Past Four and has served as a freelance record producer for several local and regional artists.
