Kansas City Jazz: An Online Tour

In Kansas City, Missouri in the 1920s and 1930s, jazz musicians pioneered a new, more improvisational style of jazz. The evolution of Kansas City jazz was influenced and shaped by significant social and historical forces like the Great Migration and Prohibition, and unfolded against the backdrop of a dramatically changing city.  In Kansas City Jazz: An Online Tour, we will explore the evolution of Kansas City jazz and the social context of its development.

Written, developed, and filmed in partnership with the Midwest Chapter and members of the historical and musical community of Kansas City, this 10-stop historical online tour is a production of the American Musicological Society. The tour will be posted in the 2023-2024 academic year.
