Marc Rice

Biography

Marc Rice is Professor of Musicology at Truman State University and is the Area Chair of the Perspectives of Music program.  He has extensively published on gender and race issues concerning jazz in the Midwest.  His book Black Music in the Black Press: An Anthology of Essays from the Heartland exams the representation of music in Midwest African American newspapers from the 19th century to World War II. His work can also be found in the journals American Music and Musical Quarterly, and the Encyclopedia of African American Music, and the Grove Encyclopedia of American Music.  He has also conducted fieldwork in Louisiana, tracing the Cajun music revival, and is currently researching the implications of the New Media on musical production and consumption.  He teaches the Music History sequence for music majors, graduate courses on Early music and music and improvisation, as well as courses on jazz history, the music of Louisiana, and music and political protest.
